Call About Your Memorial

Serving Marion Families Since 1876

Originally founded in Shelby, Ohio in 1876, Houpt Monuments has proudly served the Marion, OH community since the 1920s. This company grew alongside the community and has remained family-owned through changing times, evolving memorial styles, and major shifts in the way monument work is designed and completed.

That kind of longevity means a great deal to us because our work is closely tied to family history. In many cases, the people who visit us today are connected to families we served decades ago, and sometimes even generations ago.

We consider that return trust one of the strongest signs of what Houpt Monuments has meant to the area. A memorial is built to last, and we believe the relationship behind it should be approached with the same sense of permanence, care, and responsibility.

Memorial Craftsmanship That Stays Local

One of the most important things that sets Houpt Monuments apart is how much of the work we handle ourselves. Rather than sending key stages of the memorial process elsewhere, we complete layout, custom engraving, etching and final setting with direct local oversight.

All engraving is performed in our own shop. That gives us control over the details and allows us to stay closely connected to the work from the design stage through completion.

For families, that means the people helping you choose the memorial are part of the same company responsible for creating and placing it. We believe that kind of continuity matters, especially when the project carries emotional and historical importance.

Ear with a heart symbolizing careful listening during memorial planning

Every Memorial Begins With Listening

No two families grieve the same way, and no two memorials need to tell the same story. That is why we begin with conversation rather than assumptions.

During the first consultation, we take time to learn about your loved one, your preferences, the cemetery requirements, and the type of tribute you want to create. Some families arrive with a very clear idea, while others only know that they want something meaningful and appropriate.

Both starting points are completely normal. Our role is to help you work through the choices step by step, explain what is possible, and give you room to make decisions at a pace that feels comfortable.

Custom Headstones and Grave Markers With Meaning

A headstone or grave marker does more than identify a burial place. It becomes a permanent point of connection for children, grandchildren, relatives, friends, and future generations who may visit long after the people who commissioned it are gone.

We help families create personalized memorials that reflect names, dates, relationships, symbols, inscriptions, and design details that carry meaning. Every element deserves careful thought because even a small detail can become an important part of how someone is remembered.

Our goal is not to over-complicate the process. We want to help you create something accurate, dignified, lasting, and personal enough to feel like it belongs specifically to the person or family being honored.

In-House Engraving Gives Us Greater Control

Because our engraving is completed in-house, we can oversee the work closely and address design or production adjustments directly when reasonable. That is a major advantage compared with monument providers that rely heavily on outside production.

In-house engraving also allows us to maintain stronger consistency between the approved layout and the finished stone. We can review spacing, lettering, design placement, and other details as the work progresses.

This level of control supports the kind of craftsmanship we believe families deserve. The memorial is not treated like a simple order passing through multiple vendors. It remains part of our responsibility from beginning to end.

Precision Layout Is Part of the Craft

Good monument work requires more than selecting a stone and adding lettering.

Layout is a technical and artistic part of the process because names, dates, inscriptions, images, decorative elements, and overall proportions need to work together visually.

Our team brings decades of experience in memorial layout and stone engraving. We think carefully about spacing, readability, balance, and how the design will appear once it is carved into the granite.

That precision matters because monuments are intended to be viewed for generations. A thoughtful layout helps ensure the memorial feels balanced and respectful both on the day it is set and many years into the future.

Monument Setting Requires Experience Too

The final setting of a monument is just as important as the engraving itself.

Heavy stone placement requires specialized equipment, careful handling, and an understanding of cemetery conditions and placement requirements.

We have extensive experience with monument setting and use equipment designed for the weight and precision these installations require. Our team works to place each memorial properly and respectfully in its final location.

Families should not have to coordinate multiple companies for design, engraving, transportation, and setting. By handling the process from our shop through cemetery installation, we make the experience more manageable and maintain responsibility throughout the project.

Helping Families Understand Cemetery Requirements

Cemetery rules can vary, and that can make memorial planning feel more complicated than expected.

Size limits, foundation requirements, placement guidelines, and approved monument styles may all affect what can be installed.

We help families understand those practical considerations while they are planning the memorial. That guidance can prevent unnecessary confusion and help ensure the design works within the requirements of the final location.

We know most families do not deal with cemetery planning often, so we do not expect you to arrive knowing the terminology or process. We are here to explain the details in a straightforward way and help you move forward with confidence.

A Legacy Carried Through Generations

Houpt Monuments traces its roots back to 1876, when William Henry Houpt founded the company in Shelby Ohio. With a vision for building a lasting business and serving the community, William H. Houpt went on to establish five separate companies – one for each of his sons.

Through the generations, those businesses evolved, and the company that remains today represents the last of the five original Houpt Monument companies. It is the continuation of a legacy that began 150 years ago.

Established by William Henry Houpt in 1876. William H. passed it to his son, William Clyde Houpt. Clyde passed it to his son John W. “Jack” Houpt.  The tradition continued when Jack passed the company to Stephen Redmond . Stephen then passed it to his daughter, Gloria Redmond.

In 1975 at just 15 years old, Stephen Redmond began his journey with Houpt Monuments, working after school and Saturdays. After two years, Stephen pursued his welding certification and began his career at Marion Power Shovel, where he remained until the company closed its doors. In 1986 Stephen returned to Houpt Monuments, this time as a full time member of the team. His dedication and years of experience eventually led to him to take ownership of the company in 2002. In 2026, Stephen passed the company to his daughter, Gloria Redmond, continuing the family legacy into the next generation.

Today, Houpt Monuments stands as the last remaining company of William Henry Houpt’s original five businesses ~ a living connection to the past and a legacy that continues into the future.

From William Henry Houpt in 1876 to the Redmond family today, Houpt Monuments remains a story of family, craftsmanship, dedication and a commitment to carrying one generations work into the next. For 150 years Houpt Monuments has been shaped by generations of dedication. Each generation has added to the story while keeping the values established in 1876.

Meet Gloria Redmond

Gloria Redmond’s own journey with Houpt Monuments began in 2003, when she started working at the business after school her senior year of high school. Following her graduation, she joined the company full time and has continued to dedicate herself to the craft, the business and the families it serves.

Gloria continues the tradition of personal involvement that has always defined Houpt Monuments. Her role reflects both the business side of the company and the craftsmanship behind the memorials created in our shop.

She works directly with monument production and engraving, giving families confidence that leadership remains connected to the actual work. That hands-on involvement helps preserve the quality standards passed down through generations. Today, her children, Ethan and Aadelyn also work there with her.

We believe it is important for customers to know who is behind the memorial they are creating for their loved one. At Houpt Monuments, the people guiding the process are closely connected to the craftsmanship itself.

Connect With Our Family-Owned Team

Reasons to work with us

Memorial work requires a different kind of customer service because families are often making decisions during a difficult and emotional period. We approach those conversations with patience, empathy, and respect.

Our values are rooted in compassion, integrity, craftsmanship, and family-oriented service. We do not believe anyone should feel rushed through the process or pressured into making decisions before they are ready.

We also believe accountability matters. Because the work is completed locally and handled directly by our team, families know who is responsible for the design, engraving, and final setting.

Some people visit us because a loved one has recently passed, while others come in to plan ahead. Pre-planning a monument can relieve future stress and give individuals more control over how they want to be remembered.

Planning in advance also allows families to make decisions without the same emotional pressure that can come immediately after a loss. Details such as stone style, inscription, layout, and cemetery placement can be considered thoughtfully.

We understand that pre-planning can feel unusual at first, so we keep the conversation comfortable and straightforward. Our role is simply to explain the options and help you decide whether planning ahead makes sense for your family.

Most of our work is with local families and individuals, but our experience also extends to civic and community markers. Over 150 years, Houpt Monuments has contributed to the memorial landscape of the region in ways that reach beyond individual cemetery plots.

These larger markers can help preserve community history, commemorate important people or events, and create lasting points of remembrance for future generations.

Whether we are working on a family headstone or a broader community memorial, the standard remains the same. Accuracy, durability, thoughtful design, and careful craftsmanship all matter because the finished piece becomes part of the historical record.

Our reputation has been built through generations rather than through short-term promotion. Families return to us because they remember how previous generations were treated and because they have seen our monuments continue standing years later.

That trust is powerful because memorial work is deeply personal. When someone recommends Houpt Monuments to another family, they are not simply recommending a product. They are recommending the people and process behind it.

We are proud to be one of the longest-standing family-owned businesses in Marion County, but we do not take that history for granted. We know every new family gives us another opportunity to live up to it.

We Stand Behind Our Craftsmanship

Our commitment is to provide accurate, enduring memorials backed by careful workmanship from design through setting. We stand behind the quality of our granite, engraving, and installation process.

Because our production and engraving are handled directly in our shop, we can respond to reasonable design or production adjustments without relying entirely on outside vendors. That gives us greater control and helps us address concerns more directly.

We want families to feel confident that the monument has been approached with the level of care its meaning deserves. Quality is not just about the stone itself. It is about every step that turns that stone into a lasting tribute.
